Key housing projects of the last 25 years
We're now a quarter of the way through the current century, making this an opportune moment to review some of Cruden Homes’ landmark projects and developments since the turn of the millennium. From Bearsden to Barnton, we’ve constructed and marketed new homes in some of Scotland’s most prestigious postcodes since 2000 – while simultaneously working to regenerate and revitalise historically deprived districts including the New Gorbals and Glasgow Green.
Cruden Homes can call upon more than eight decades of construction and design expertise, having assembled everything from apartment developments to executive detached villas over that period. We regularly tailor our property styles to suit different locations, and some of our most high-profile projects since the millennium have necessitated bespoke designs and approaches.
To encapsulate everything we’ve learned along the way, we’ve chosen to showcase five landmark housing projects we’ve been involved with since the millennium – from the sublime to the regenerative…
Athletes Village
Glasgow’s successful bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games necessitated extensive infrastructure work. Cruden Homes played a central role in the City Legacy Consortium which transformed a largely unused 88-acre Dalmarnock site into a home for 6,500 athletes from every corner of the Commonwealth. Today, these award-winning and architecturally unique buildings along the banks of the Clyde have received over 30 accolades and are home to 700 families, with a blend of apartments, terraced villas and townhouses powered by a state-of-the-art district heating system.
Raploch
Like Dalmarnock, the comprehensive regeneration of Stirling’s once deprived Raploch district revitalised another area historically synonymous with social issues. A £120 million community-led masterplan saw the construction of amenities including a health campus, primary schools and sports facilities. Cruden’s Stirling Bridge development heralded multiple phases of apartments and houses and was recognised for its excellence in community engagement, while the more recent Royal Park View project incorporated a mixed-tenure blend of social and private apartments and houses.
Longniddry Village
Many Cruden Homes’ projects have majored on exclusivity. With its leafy avenues of carefully crafted villas, the East Lothian village of Longniddry required something special to be built on its southern flank. Cruden Homes delivered the multiple award-winning Longniddry Village, incorporating traditional architecture within hugely characterful streets designed (and painted) to mirror traditional east coast villages. Numerous house styles were blended together, from bungalows and coach houses to terraced, semi- and detached villas.
The Avenue
Another exclusive Cruden Homes’ development – though for different reasons – is The Avenue, located in Edinburgh’s much sought-after Barnton suburb. Featuring contemporary architecture and backing onto a golf course, this age-exclusive development combines independent living with hotel-style luxury for buyers over the age of 55. Comprising highly sustainable apartments, penthouses and villas, everything from the leafy landscaped gardens to the on-site guest suite have been meticulously designed to complement later living in this prestigious suburb.
Evolution
Reflecting the diversity of Cruden Homes’ post-millennial output, Evolution at Gracemount in Edinburgh posed a very different challenge to The Avenue. This two-phase regeneration scheme in south Edinburgh blended apartments and houses with a variety of tenures, from social and mid-market rent to shared equity and private sale. In partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council, Evolution was honoured at the 2012 Homes for Scotland Awards, having provided 215 much needed homes in the capital.
When construction and sales conclude, and the advertising signage and flags are removed, a new development becomes an established part of its surroundings. The developments outlined above have already done so, alongside numerous others that Cruden Homes have constructed since 2000. Each built with pride and subsequently occupied by loving residents – as will the developments yet to be built between now and 2050…
